Centenary Celebrations

March 12, 2012, marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of one of Canada’s greatest poets. Canadians from Cape Breton to Vancouver Island joined in celebrating Irving Layton. Never before in Canadian history has this country united to honour the life and work of one of its poets, but on this occasion gatherings organized across Canada, and internationally, paid tribute to Irving’s impressive impact as a poet, teacher, and human being. Favourite poems were read aloud and reminiscences shared among the many whose hearts, minds, and lives have been moved by the powerful spirit that was, and will always be, Irving Layton.
